Interesting discussion (and I agree with Deion about what Warner shares):
If we go by the criterion mentioned by Deion and Warner, I don’t think I’d put in players like Bettis, Curtis Martin–probably even TD. Probably not Steve Smith Sr., too. I feel like a lot of the semi-finalists wouldn’t make it.
At the same time, there’s something to be said about playing for a long time, and at relatively high level.
Going back to the list, the only guy I feel confident about is Troy Polamalu.
What do you guys think of the following players that got in?
Steve Atwater
Edgerrin James
Isaac Bruce
Steve Hutchinson
Troy Polamalu
Polamalu is the only slam dunk for me. I don’t know enough about Hutchinson to have a strong opinion. Bruce seems like a decent pick. but the others feel like borderline picks to me.
Me too. I’d have to hear the cases for inclusion for them all except Polamalu.
There were 20 inductees for 2020, to celebrate the NFL’s centennial.
Steve Atwater, S, Broncos and Jets
Isaac Bruce, WR, Rams and 49ers
Harold Carmichael, WR, Eagles and Cowboys (what? he was in Dallas?)
Jim Covert, OT, Bears
Bobby Dillon, DB, Packers
Cliff Harris, S, Cowboys
Winston Hill, OT, Jets and Rams
Steve Hutchinson, G, Seahawks, Vikings, and Titans
Edgerrin James, RB, Colts, Cardinals, Seahawks (Seahawks?!)
Alex Karras, DT, Lions
Troy Polamalu, S, Steelers
Donnie Shell, DB, Steelers
Duke Slater, T, Badgers, Independents, Cardinals
Mac Speedie, end, Browns
Ed Sprinkle, end, Bears
Bill Cowher
Jimmy Johnson
I think Carmichael is a solid choice, which makes me think I have to make Bruce a solid choice too.
I tend to think Carmichael should get in, too. Bruce (and Torry Holt) feel like the Jerome Bettis/Curtis Martin of WRs. They’re very good, but I’m not sure if they’re good enough to get into the HoF. I think Bruce probably deserves it, though. Oh, if all these guys are deserving, I think Cliff Branch should get in, too.
(I, too, didn’t realize Carmichael played with the Cowboys.)
