Themes For My Song Class

In my upcoming rock/pop discussion class, participants will be selecting, listening and discussing songs based on themes. I have some of the themes already, and I thought hearing song suggestions, or even theme suggestions, from others would be fun.

Here’s one theme I had in mind that I wanted feedback on:

songs about body parts. I know there are a lot of songs about eyes, but what about other parts of the body. Are there a lot of songs about part of the body other than eyes? A lot of songs didn’t come to mind. Here are a few: “Head to Toe” (Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam Full Force)–although this is not really about heads or toes, as far as I remember; “Put Your Head on My Shoulder” (Paul Anka); “Our Lips are Sealed” (The Go-Gos). To me, these aren’t great choices because they’re not really about the body parts–the songs just contain the words of the body parts.

  1. The theme for the first week: Places

Some songs off the top of my head:

“Aloha ia ‘o Wai’anae” (not sure which version)
(There’s a lot more Hawaiian songs, but I’m going to skip them.)

“Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay” (Otis Redding)
    “Lights” (Journey)
“Carolina In My Mind” (James Taylor)
    “Oh Shenandoah” (Rope–featuring Petra Haden)
    “Georgia” (Ray Charles)
    “Sweet Home Alabama” (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
