I’ve been almost completely cutoff from the NFL, but the news of the Seahawks trading Russ to Denver got my attention. it’s not surprising, but I was curious to see what the Hawks got in return.
Carroll moving towards a 3-4 defense also got my attention. How many defensive coaches make a switch like this? Two only come to mind–Zimmer, when he was with the Cowboys (switched from 4-3 to 3-4) and maybe Belichick, whose Patriot defenses have been playing more like a 4-3 for a while now. The chances of success seem slim. Had he hired an established 3-4 DC (e.g., Vic Fangio or even Robert Flores), I’d be more optimistic, but he promoted his DL coach. I like the coach, and he has coached in 3-4 systems (with Fangio), but he’s unproven. (Carroll also brought in Sean Desai, who was the Bears DC and coached under Fangio as well, but I’m uncertain how good he is.)
The Raider’s moves–picking up Chandler Jones and Davante Adams–also caught my eye. I kinda like the move to get Jones, but I’m not too keen on paying for Adams. The only time this move seems justified is if the player is the last missing piece. The Eagles acquiring TO is the example that comes to mind. If that’s the case for the Raiders, then I can see the move being justified.
Oh, I’m not that enthused about the hiring of Josh McDaniels. But if he can replicate Belichick’s coaching, I’ll be happy (which I guess is obvious).

Here you said he has a better arm than Burrow. 🙂 Thanks to this conversation I’ve been following his career. He started a game for Dallas the season before last when Andy Dalton went down, and this is his second stint with the Raiders.
Mariota is the main guy right now in Atlanta. I like that move. It’s good for Mariota obviously, but great for Atlanta as he can be a great bridge for a rookie QB (maybe not this year – since apparently there aren’t many great ones in the this year’s draft).
I heard a comment that the Falcons are trying to tank–and somehow seems believable. I believe they have a huge amount of dead money from Matt Ryan, and I don’t think they have a strong overall roster–but maybe I’m wrong about that. Or, to put it another way: is this a team that provides Mariota (or any QB) a decent shot at success?
It seems more likely that the Falcons have resigned themselves to do poorly, but Mariota will be a good guy to hold the fort in such a situation. I hope I’m wrong about that, though.

I’m annoyed with myself because I planned to post this Saturday night during a 3:00 a.m. fantasy draft, in between picks, but the draft was canceled and I forgot about posting, and now Week 1 is nearly over so it’s going to look like my predictions were influenced by Week 1 games, which they aren’t.

If I wrote this after yesterday’s games, I’d put Dallas in last and move the Commanders up one. I would also consider moving Arizona up and the Rams down, but I’ll stick with what I got.
As you know, each year I pick a team to come out of nowhere, because one team always does, and this year it’s the Giants. I suspect people in my fantasy league at work think I’ve been talking up the Giants all summer because I wanted them to draft Giants (while I drafted zero Giants), but I really think they’re on the brink. Perhaps a season away, or a season away from being a season away. That’s what I said about the Dolphins two years ago and they made a run THAT year. So yeah. Giants to win the NFC East.
Super Bowl: Bills defeat 49ers, only because I don’t have the guts to say Ravens defeat Niners, so put an asterisk here. I want to be able to say “I sorta told you so” when it happens.
MVP: Josh Allen seems to be the consensus pick, and it’s tough to argue against. But I’d look out for Lamar Jackson.
Comeback: Christian McCaffrey.
Defensive rookie: How about George Karlaftis, edge rusher for the Chiefs? The only other contender I’ve actually kept an eye on is Derek Stingley, the Texans corner. He’s Darryl Stingley’s grandson.
Offensive rookie: Man, Don’s drafting Drake London (Atlanta WR) in fantasy seems prescient, and I drafted Chris Olave (New Orleans WR), but for various stupid reasons having mostly to do with my consuming lots of media based in Washington D.C., I’m going way down the board with Jahan Dotson, Washington WR. A month ago, he was at +2500 to win this award, while Kenny Pickett (Steelers QB) was the +600 favorite.
