  1. I pay for Spotify, which comes with a low-tier Hulu membership. Also the Criterion Channel and Amazon Prime. I have a free year of Apple+ and that’s been pretty good.

  2. What are some the best shows on Apple+?

Do you know any for live performances–e.g., music, drama, dance (modern dance would be great)?

    1. I don’t know if you know this about me, but I really don’t like watching videos online. When people post YouTube videos, I rarely check them out. I very seldom fall down YouTube holes. I’m not saying it doesn’t happen, but it doesn’t happen often. I don’t know why this is, although I suspect it has something to do with the internet starting off as a text-only platform. It was never graphical until the world wide web, and it was never multimedia until sometime after that. Part of me still thinks of the net the way it was before.

I’m slowly coming around, but I’m not there yet.

So during these dark dismal days of pandemic, I haven’t taken advantage of live-streaming concerts of bands I like very much, not even when they’re free.

However, because I follow a lot of musicians on social media, I’ve been aware whenever they’ve offered the live performances, so this is one way to know about these things.

One metal blog I read used to keep a list of upcoming livestreaming shows, pinned to the top of the blog. So this is another way: find the community of people into whatever you want to watch, and keep an eye out for announcements.

Another way is to join the platforms on which the musicians (or whoever) stream, like Twitch or Crowdcast.io. You can just jump on the site and see what’s streaming right now.

It sounds like you’re mostly interested in a repository of already live-streamed content, though. My guess is YouTube is your best friend. You can search for the KIND of thing you’re interested in, and see if they link back to some platform featuring other streams of similar content. Yeah, that’s a weak suggestion but it’s a start. If I were as interested in it as you, I might find the hunt worthwhile.

    2. I’ve only watched a few things on Apple TV+, but I kind of like Central Park, an animated comedy musical series. I’ve only seen three episodes, though, and I don’t love it. I’m guessing it will hold your attention no more than six minutes.

  3. This list includes documentaries, performances, and other programming from arts and music organizations around the world.

This list was published in May, but the artists might still be doing their regularly scheduled streams: https://www.vulture.com/2020/05/all-musicians-streaming-live-concerts.html

I said YouTube might be your best friend, but maybe it’s Google. I got all these except Crowdcast from one Google query.

      1. You know what you’re jonesing for better than I do, so you may find something better if you do a Google search. I typed in a rather non-specific search and these (except Crowdcast) were all on the first page of results. I’m sure you could do a deeper, more effective dive than I could.

    1. I did a search for live jazz, but I didn’t get a lot of hits, if I recall correctly. But I was also interested in live performance more broadly, and I appreciate what you dug up.

  4. I’m thinking about moving from Apple music to this site.

Gioia says they compensate the musicians more, too.

The bad thing is that the catalogue isn’t as big as a site like Spotify.

I’m also interested in Bandcamp, but that seems like about purchasing individual albums/songs.
